Stringless flat green pods. Can be eaten fresh when young or shelled at maturity. A vigorous grower producing prolific crops which are easy to pick. Excellent source of folate iron.
To Sow & Grow:
Sow indoors for surest results, 2.5cm (1 inch) Deep in to individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20C (60-68F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 25cm (10 inches ) apart, when frosts are over. Allow 45cm (18 inches) between rows. Provide poles or netting for plants to climb.
Or sow outdoors for ease, where they are to crop , 5cm (2 inches) deep, directly into finely preapared soil which has already been watered. Delay sowing if soil is cold or waterlogged. Sow two seeds together, 30cm (1 inch) between each position . Allow 45cm (18 inches) between rows. Thin to leave stronger plant. Water well until plants established. Provide poles or netting for plants to climb. Pick green beans regularly to encourage further cropping.
Mr Fs tips: the pods can be cooked like any green beans when young or left to mature, and the white beans shelled and dried. Soak dried beans prior to cooking.
