Shiitake (Marvellous Mushrooms)

Treasured in Asia for centuries, with a superb flavour often described as meaty or smokey and a fine firm texture. Perfect for oriental dishes, stir-fries, grilling, casseroles, soups and gravy.

Sowing into wood Sowing the mushrooms into wood is simple and straightforward process using the sandwich method. It is best to grow these mushrooms between April and October but it can be done at any time of the year. These mushrooms can be grown on Mr Fothergills easy to use Fibre Boards. Alternatively, grow on logs from almost any broad leaved tree, although beech, birch and oak are the most suitable ( do not use conifer). A healthy, freshly cut log about 15cm in diameter and 40-50cm long should be carefully split lengthways. Be sure to have clean hands tools to reduce the riskof contamination which could spoil the results. Spread the contents of the pack over the surface of one half of the log and tightly tie the opposite half back into place with string.
